Overview
Interstate 87 is a vital interstate highway for the Capital District. Providing connections to New York, the Adirondack North Country, and Montréal.

Interstate 87 is known by two names in the Capital District. South of Albany, Interstate 87 is part of the New York State Thruway, hence it is known simply as "The Thruway". North of Albany, Interstate 87 is known as the Adirondack Northway, or "The Northway."

Both portions of Interstate 87 were constructed in the late 1950's and early 1960's. The Thruway portion of Interstate 87 predates the route designation, but the Northway portion was created after the Interstate Highway System was enacted. Before the Northway was constructed, New York State Thruway Authority considered a Northern Extension via the route of the Northway.
